Jazz Mutant

Jazz Mutant creates amazing Multi-touch tools for musicians. Their inventions allow for immense flexibility and control. Any performer can build their ideal setup of knobs sliders and customize it to fit their needs.

As a video editor I would absolutely love to see this built for video editing. Some of the most fun I’ve ever had editing was on a Steenbeck. Sure it was time consuming, but you just can’t beat the tactile feel of actually touching the film, making marks and cuts in the real world. I would love to have a tool that made the process of editing more tactile once again. It seems doable if there’s a will.

It would be amazing to have the Steenbeck experience duplicated in an enhanced multi-touch setup. To be able to flick through clips, make marks and organize clips by manipulating them on the screen in front of you. It would require an immense amount of refinement to get it right, but I hope someone decides to push editing tools in new directions. It seems like we are sort of stuck in a rut with J-K-L.

The past few weeks have been an interesting ride for Jim Jannard and his new venture RED. Canon and Nikon both released DSLRs that shoot HD video. Granted the Nikon has major CMOS rolling shutter issues. But the Canon shoots beautiful video. Which leaves RED to reconsider the future of Scarlet.

I just hope that future includes HDR. HDR is all about capturing huge dynamic range. I would be happy with 2k resolution if it had the dynamic range of HDR. As far as I know there is no camera that can shoot full motion 24 frame per second HDR. HDR would allow immense latitude in creating some amazing visuals. I’m sure they could pull it off. In the meantime I’ll have my fingers crossed. Or maybe the mad scientists at Ikonoshop will beat them to it!

I love technology, perhaps even a bit too much. It’s easy for filmmakers to get obsessed with technology over all else. It can become all about the specs of your camera, is it just 4k or is it 8k? Is it made of carbon fiber or just boring metal. Meanwhile the stuff that matters, scripts, ideas, and content are all forgotten. I’m as guilty as anyone. I made a small little promise to myself that I would try to steer clear of technology in this little space and focus on ideas. I’m going to continue to “try” to steer clear. But at times I just have to indulge. Hello, my name is Ben and I have a camera addiction.
